Working with Stone

Our lapidary work typically consist of 4 steps: identification, cutting, sanding, and polishing. More or less steps may be required dependant on vision goal.

We hand-polish even the smallest pieces such as pendants, and charms. Machine-tumbled items will be noted in descriptions.

Honed or Polished?

Honed

The exterior of the stone has been sanded to a smooth, consistent surface. It has a matte look and contain no sharp edges/bumps. Honed rocks have a natural tumbled appeal. We typically write this as “semi-polished” in our product descriptions.

Polished

The porous exterior has been refined to a slick, shiny surface. Clarity in stone detail as well as colour brilliancy are enhanced. To achieve this highly reflective lustre, extra steps are required in comparison to a honed finish.

Finish choice is entirely up to preference in aesthetic. We give our clients an option if they want any of our honed (semi-polished) pieces to be polished. Completed polished items cannot be reversed to honed.
